April 13: WORKSHOP - Writing Motherhood

Motherhood changes us, and all of us in different ways: it can affect our roles in society and our families, our sense of time and priorities, our bodies, and even our writing. Becoming a parent and beginning to care for a child is a creative practice, yet we may find it difficult to find the time, or the motivation, to put pen to paper during the labor that is mothering. This workshop is for writers who have become mothers (self-defined), or mothers who need to write. 4 weeks starting April 13th.

Motherhood changes us...Becoming a parent and beginning to care for a child is a creative practice, yet we may find it difficult to find the time, or the motivation, to put pen to paper during the labor that is mothering. This workshop is for writers who have become mothers (self-defined), or mothers who need to write. In this four-week class, we will read and discuss texts on the topic of motherhood from a diversity of perspectives, and explore and interrogate our own relationship with motherhood through our writing. Sign up here!

ONLINE WORKSHOP, Not Exotic: Poetry on Asian American Identity (ASYNCHRONOUS, on WET.INK), 4 weeks, 2/13/2023-3/12/2023, hosted by Hugo House. This class will focus on poetry by Asian American writers in the United States. We will engage with poetry and spoken word, considering themes of belonging and otherness, homeland and loss, and racism and immigration. Special attention will be given to challenging silence, misrepresentation, the current climate of anti-Asian sentiment, and how we challenge it by telling our own stories. Sign up here!

APRIL-MAY

ONLINE WORKSHOP, 6 Weeks, 3 Poems (ASYNCHRONOUS, on WET.INK), 6 weeks, 4/5/2023 to 5/10/2023, hosted by Grubstreet. Want to experiment with new forms of poetry, but aren’t sure where to begin? Or do you find yourself with too many ideas to commit to one? Whatever the case, if you’re ready to produce new work, this class is for you! In this course, you will have one goal: to write three new poems. Over six weeks, we’ll explore different poetry forms and themes, reading published examples, and studying the craft behind them. Sign up here!

VIRTUAL LIVE WRITING GROUP, Halo-Halo Cafe for Asian and Asian American Writers, 6 Wednesdays, starting 4/26/2023, 3-430P PST, 6-730pm EST, hosted by Grubstreet. Need some structure away from the daily grind to write? Do you crave writing in a space that's safe and encouraging? Or do you just want to be in fellowship with other Asian and Asian-American writers? Bring your halo-halo, boba, matcha or kalamansi juice and join the instructor-led Halo-Halo Cafe: a virtual space specifically dedicated to Asian-identified writers! In this relaxed environment, we'll meet for 90 minutes once a week on Zoom to write, connect, get support, and share snippets of our work, all while the instructor plays focus-friendly music. This is a facilitated group meeting without readings, that will begin with a check-in and end with a check-out.  *Halo-Halo is a popular Filipino dessert that literally means "mix-mix" in Tagalog.  All genres, including mixed genres, welcomed! Sign up here!

ONLINE 1-DAY WORKSHOP, Belonging and Alterity: Writing Race, Culture & Identity, 3 hours, 4/28/2023 4-7EST (12-3PST), hosted by Grubstreet. This seminar is intended to highlight Writers of Color and encourage directly writing about race, culture and identity (intersectionally, including gender, sexual orientation, ability, nationality, etc) during these times. We'll watch and read short works together by BIPOC writers, do writing exercises and have space to share about being writers of various groups who may not commonly see ourselves in the dominant narrative and mainstream spaces. This pairs well with the 4-week workshop also called “Belonging” (see below) or can stand alone. Sign up here!

ONLINE WORKSHOP, Belonging: Writing Home & Identity for Writers of Color, 4 weeks, 5/3/2023 to 5/24/2023, hosted by Grubstreet. For self-identified writers of color of various identities, this class will explore identity, borders, multilinguality, migration, race and origins (real, imagined, and everything in between).  We will explore what it means to belong or feel outsiderhood in the United States; we will write to first challenge and respond to dominant narratives and create narratives that reflect ourselves, self-define ourselves in all our complexities. Sign up here!

ONLINE LIVE WORKSHOP, Revolutionary Mothering: Writing at the Intersections of Race & Identity, 4 weeks, 5/5/2023-5/26/2023, 10a-12pm PST, hosted by Grubstreet. Inspired by the anthology Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines, which "places marginalized mothers of color at the center of a world of necessary transformation," this class focuses on people who identify as mothers and BIPOC. We will read, discuss, and write at the intersections of identity, recognizing how race, ethnicity, language, class, gender, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with mothering and conceptions of intergenerational motherhood. Sample readings include essays/poems from Revolutionary MotheringRaising Mothers, Maya Angelou, Ali Wong, Toi Derricotte, and more. Sign up here!
